Artifacts consists of eight wall panels, each situated east and west respectively between the adjecent window bands of the southern stairwells. Each panel was realized as an inlay (intarsia) in the oak real wood veneers of the wall panels. The 0.6 millimeter thick smoked oak inlays were laser-cut and seamlessly replaced in the oak surface.
The eight individual panels connect the staircase levels by a visual concept derived from nature. Inspired by the forms of the growth of an oak tree, the work marks eight situations by forming a multi-part image which is succesively revealed to the viewer by walking through the building. By transforming the documentary model of a tree from nature by means of digital process, Kristof Georgen creates an abstract composition by linear forms. Like a musical score, sound and blank space are forming a rhythm. The concept sees itself as an inscription into architecture and visualizes questions about the relation of nature and social transformations.
