Verbal commentary upon works of visual art exists as a separate strand alongside sensory-visual perception. Taking as one point of departure the art-related »Reden über Kunst« discussions during the founding phase of the German Kunstvereine (art societies) in the early nineteenth century, the history of these societies can be viewed as mirroring the history of the culture of conversation about art and its forms of appropriation. Forms taken by reception of this kind are social conversation, silence, the visitor’s wordless contemplation of the pictures on show, or the indeterminate hum of the crowds. The audio installation speaking was based on speech documents dating from the period 1972 to 2002 and taken from the archives of Württembergischer Kunstverein and the broadcaster Südwestrundfunk.
