refrain I (stage) reflects the relationship between action and reaction, between stage and audience. The gestures of political speechmakers and parliamentary votes are visualised in a series of sequences from TV broadcasts, shown in extreme slow motion. The sound of sheets of paper being turned over is played into the space over a monitor loudspeaker as a continuous rhythm. The audio-visual material is presented centrally on slightly raised stage elements, which are cordoned off by railings. Loudspeakers placed behind the barriers play edited recordings from mass events, such as thunderous applause or the fan choruses from football stadiums.
